On 12 March 2018 the new ISO 45001 standard came into force: find out the times and methods to adapt the certification of your management system. Organisations, certified or not BS OHSAS 18001, can verify the compliance of the management system with the requirements of ISO 45001: 2018. The level of impact determined by the changes / innovations introduced by the ISO 45001 requirements depends on the degree of maturity and effectiveness of the current management system.
The first step consists in identifying the real costs, in terms of time and resources, determined by the entire process of adapting to the new requirements, so as to:
- identify which aspects of the system need to be adjusted
- develop a specific adaptation plan
- provide training to the personnel concerned, in order to ensure adequate knowledge/ awareness
- update the OHSAS management system and verify its effectiveness
- contact Innovacert for the migration process of the valid certification.
Migration phases and deadlines
OHSAS certified organisations can migrate to the new standard within three years of the entry into force of ISO 45001 (12 March 2018 - 11 March 2021). At the end of this period, the certificates issued in accordance with BS OHSAS 18001 will no longer be valid.
Migration can occur in conjunction with a surveillance or renewal audit, or between two scheduled audits. The migration audit is divided into two phases: off-site document review, during which the main changes made by the organisation to its document structure will be analysed, and subsequent on-site audit to verify the effective application of the new requirements. from ISO 45001.
If the audit is successful, the certificate of conformity to the new standard is issued. Conversely, if the audit fails and compliance with the previous revision of the standard remains, the organisation can maintain the old certification with a limited expiry at the end of the transition period.
